Climate change has moved from being a purely environmental and development issue to one of international security!

Climate change increases the risks of conflicts and social and economic decline at a local, regional and global level. Here are some security issues the states will probably face:

  • conflict over access to natural resources such as water;
  • insecurity of livelihoods, leading to migration;
  • extreme weather events and disasters that increase the potential for political instability;
  • food insecurity leading to social instability;
  • loss of territory due to sea-level rise;
  • reduced efficiency of energy production.

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) is the world’s largest regional security organization, working to ensure peace, democracy and stability. Today, the organization needs your creative thinking to create a stunning visual that will make people aware of the security and conflict risks linked to climate change.

And guess what! The winning entries will be shown during two major events: at a conference on the topic of climate change and security in October 2015 organized by the OSCE and during a big United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Paris in December 2015.  So we need amazing visuals to catch the attention of a high-profile audience!

Help us to make the world a better place!

Through a stunning visual with a tagline, impress us with an idea that would contribute to raising awareness of security risks linked to climate change.

Go beyond clichés about climate change (extreme weather events and their consequences, such as floods, droughts, heat waves, sea-level rise, etc.) and make people aware of the security and conflict risks explained above.

Think about a visual with a tagline that could be easily shareable through social media networks. We are looking for a strong idea in addition to a beautiful picture. As your work maybe translated in other languages, your tagline should not be written on the visual but a separate text. So please, submit a short description that explains your creative thinking along with your visual.

Your entry may include the OSCE logo and logotype provided in the guidelines below.

Participants in this contest are restricted to the 57 OSCE participating states and our Asian and Mediterranean partner countries.

Example of a good entry: a visual in which we would see a family traveling by foot in the countryside somewhere in the world. They have all their belongings with them and they are running away from something. As a first impression, we believe they were forced into exile after a civil war in their country. Then, we realize they are running away from climate change as the tagline is saying “War isn't the cause for them fleeing but the conflicts due to scarce water are”.

Following this tagline, we would have a sub-sentence sayingMore stories about climate change security risks on www.nameofthecooperation.com”.

Example of a bad entry: a visual that shows a cliché about climate change, such as extreme weather events and their consequences, such as floods, droughts, heat waves, etc. It is a bad one, as it doesn’t show the security risks from climate change. Also, it is not seen as content that could be easily shareable through social networks.
